Matte painting is a digital art technique that combines digital painting, photographic references and 3D models to create an artwork for compositing into a full VFX scene. Matte paintings form the backdrops for most environments in CG imagery, and also in other VFX projects.
Some of the most famous matte paintings are in movies such as Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, although the technique was also used with traditional art to help make the Wizard of Oz.
